Thinking and Questioning

I've been thinking about one of the comments that several of the art minded people/critics left about me. Most of them thought I should have stopped and had a thoughtful, engaging conversation with Audrey on why she didn't like the statue. That sentence makes me want to laugh but I'll move on.

I decided to try this with Audrey. I didn't think it would be all that productive because this is the same child who just last night came into the kitchen with one hand on her hip, eyebrows raised, exasperation or annoyance written on her face and said, "Mom, you put this nightgown in my drawer! It's not mine, it's Alexis'!" So that's the reaction I get to a misplaced nightgown. She happens to love nightgowns too. Now I'm going to ask her about something she didn't like. This should be good.

Me: Audrey, remember when we went to that museum where you saw the statue that you didn't like (this is not leading because how else will she remember what I am talking about? :)

Audrey: Nods her head (not even a verbal recognition. Not a good sign)

Me: Why didn't you like the statue?

Audrey: Because it showed her booty (is that how you really spell it? It's funny just spelling it)

Me: You didn't like that?

Audrey: I don't like seeing booty's (plural?) and I never want to go back to that museum again.

She then looked back down at her bead work as if to say, we're done here. Well, it's a good thing I made my blog privatized! So should I force her to go again to make sure she is "art educated" and "open-minded?" I can just imagine that scene. Anyone who knows Audrey knows that she has strong opinions, likes to share them, and never needs any help from me on forming them.

For more fun on this go to www.milwaukeemagazine.com/cultureclub.

There is now an article all about me and my post in a magazine! I really need a hard copy of this. Seriously. I'm going to make a file in my file cabinet and put all the hard copies of the articles and comments in it. I think I call it FAMOUS. I have to say though that this article by Paul Kosidowski is fantastic. He says everything that I wanted to say. I might have to call him and leave a voice mail for him.

Oh Emily. You just don't get it. You do have to take Audrey back and make her stare at the statue until she likes it. Then you have to stare at the red, yellow and blue paintings until you like them. All to make Jeff Ircink happy. Because he is who really matters.

Oh Emily. I read the story from Lori, I feel so bad for you. Maybe that's not the right thing to say, but shame on them for not allowing oppinions. Who do they think they are? I've been pretty worked up about it, but it sounds like you are handling like a pro. You are being so Christ like, what a great example. Thanks for sharing!

Mia, you're so sweet! I've been trying to handle it well although I have to admit to having some unChristlike thoughts about some of those people. :) But I kept them to myself. Okay, maybe I expressed them to Ben but no one else! :) Glad to have you aboard my blog! :) Do you have one?
