Homework Packet

Okay, I need some feedback on this. All third grade classes at Alexis' school got homework packets sent home. It is her homework for the month. Each subject like reading, math, spelling, writing, and social studies has four or five spaces to fill in what she did for homework. Then there are suggestions as to what she can do for her homework. So basically I am deciding what her homework is. I have to look up things on the Internet and print pages out. Now, for the spelling for instance, I have no idea what words they are studying. I get nothing sent home for that. I went to a website that a list of third grade spelling lists and I printed one out not even knowing if that is correct or not. Is it just me or isn't this the teacher's job? Isn't she supposed to be the one who decides the appropriate level/kind/length of homework? I am suddenly wondering why she is isn't sending home the sheets Alexis needs to complete. I've never encountered this before. Has anyone else? I mean, I'm all for helping out at home. Last year I even asked for extra work in spelling and math. One of the problems is that I don't know which words they are learning in spelling and I don't always know exactly where they are in math. I don't know. It seems like the teachers are getting a month off of some prepping and grading? The other thing I wonder is how many parents are actually going to do this? How many will take the time to look things up and print things out and record what they did? I'm guessing not all of them. And I can't like make up my own stuff or just decide not to do it because Alexis would freak out! Oh, she would be in hysterics if she didn't turn it in on time and with every space filled in perfectly! Oh well. I'm stuck with this no matter what. I'm just hoping they don't keep it up throughout the whole school year!

Please call the teacher and tell her your concerns. If you are confused just think of how many other parents are confused. The teacher should have explained what was expected and how the homework was to be done.

If the teacher is passing work to you, I'm appalled!

It seems like the teacher should give what is to be done. In our school they give a fair amount of homework and expect it all to be done, but it doesn't count for a grade. It would be nice to know what the spelling words are they are being tested on, it is shocking that you aren't given a little more specifics.

This is really wierd. I have gotten HW sheets for the week, but not for the month. I am thinking you are right that no one else's parents are paying that much attention -- Alexis will learn the most, though!

Hailey and Sierra have had "Math Boxes" which I'm assuming are about the same thing. they send a list inside it though with lists of activities and projects and journaling they can do to complete the box. they are usually pretty easy to compleste.

Get more info from the teacher. Spelling lists are a MUST WEEKLY. You don't want them to be taking tests and missing the words. Sierra takes a pre-test on monday, studies durring the week, and they have their test on Friday. I make her spell the words aloud, write them, and re-practice ones she missed on monday.

Do they give you some websites to print homework from? I had a teacher send some of those out. it worked out OK.
